The Plot of Rambo

Rambo takes place during the political protests of the Saffron Revolution in Burma and follows John Rambo, a Vietnam War veteran who is still living in Thailand. Rambo is approached by a missionary doctor named Michael Burnett, who asks him to ferry his group up the Salween River into Burma on a humanitarian mission to provide medical aid to a village inhabited by the Karen people. After initially refusing, Rambo agrees to help when he is convinced by Michael's fiancée Sarah Miller.

During the trip up the river, the boat is stopped by pirates demanding Sarah in exchange for passage, forcing Rambo to kill them. The missionaries arrive at the village but are attacked by Burmese regime army forces led by ruthless SPDC officer Major Pa Tee Tint. Sarah, Michael, and other survivors are taken as prisoners. The pastor of the missionaries' church comes to Thailand and asks Rambo to guide a team of five mercenaries on a rescue mission.

Rambo takes the mercenaries to the site of the massacre, where they stealthily rescue the surviving hostages. However, Tint and his soldiers pursue them, and Rambo must use all of his skills to protect his new friends and fight for their freedom. The film is a thrilling action-packed adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

The Production of Rambo

Rambo is the fourth installment in the Rambo franchise and was directed and co-written by Sylvester Stallone. It is based on the character John Rambo created by author David Morrell for his novel First Blood. The film was dedicated to the memory of Richard Crenna, who had played Colonel Sam Trautman in the previous films, but passed away in 2003.

Stallone was initially unmotivated to reprise the role of John Rambo and the rights to the Rambo franchise were sold to Nu Image and Millennium Films in 2005, who green-lit the film before the release of Rocky Balboa (2006). Filming began in Thailand, Mexico, and the United States in January 2007, and ended in May 2007.

The film received mixed reviews upon its release, with praise aimed at Stallone’s direction and performance, action sequences, and musical score, but criticism for its plot, excessively graphic violence, and political commentary. Despite the mixed reviews, Rambo grossed $113.2 million worldwide against a production budget between $47.5–50 million.

Rambo was followed by Rambo: Last Blood, released in 2019. The film was a commercial success, grossing over $91 million worldwide, but received negative reviews from critics.

Cast of Rambo

Sylvester Stallone stars as John Rambo, a Vietnam War veteran who is still living in Thailand. Stallone also directed and co-wrote the film. Other notable films that Stallone has starred in include Rocky, The Expendables, and Creed.

Julie Benz plays Sarah Miller, Michael Burnett's fiancée. She is taken as a prisoner by Burmese regime army forces, leading Rambo and a team of mercenaries on a rescue mission. Benz is also known for her roles in Dexter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel.

Paul Schulze plays Michael Burnett, a missionary doctor who convinces Rambo to take him and his team up the Salween River into Burma on a humanitarian mission. Schulze has also appeared in The Sopranos, Nurse Jackie, and The Punisher.

Matthew Marsden plays School Boy, the mercenaries' sniper. Marsden has also appeared in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Resident Evil: Extinction, and Black Hawk Down.

Graham McTavish plays Lewis, a former SAS soldier and the team's leader. McTavish has also appeared in Outlander, The Hobbit trilogy, and Preacher.

Rey Gallegos plays Diaz, one of the mercenaries. Gallegos has also appeared in American Sniper, Sons of Anarchy, and CSI: Miami.

RAMBO: Not Quite a First Blood, but Still Bloody

Rambo is an action-packed film that delivers on the blood and gore that the franchise is known for. However, the plot feels like it has been done before, and the excessive violence overshadows any political commentary the film tries to make. While Stallone's direction and performance are commendable, it is not enough to carry the film. The supporting cast is forgettable, and the script lacks any depth or nuance.

Despite mixed reviews, Rambo grossed over $100 million worldwide, proving that the franchise still has a loyal fan base. However, the film fails to live up to the expectations set by its predecessors. While it may satisfy fans of mindless action, it is unlikely to win over any new audiences.

If you are a fan of the Rambo franchise, Rambo is worth a watch. However, if you are looking for a film that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, you may want to look elsewhere. Rambo is available on Netflix in Canada, and many more films can be unlocked with ExpressVPN. Sign up now to start streaming!
