Rosa's rich parents have Matteo and Simone's communist parents over for a disastrous dinner. At the carnival, a confused Nora confronts her grandmother.

Trying to figure things out, Nora confesses to Rosa, but swears her to secrecy. Simone becomes obsessed with the possibility of Sandro's criminality.

Nora forces her grandmother to tell her the truth about how, in the midst of war, she came into their lives.

With Nora's support, a frightened Simone makes a decision. At the carnival, Ettore buys Antonio his dream ride while Miranda stews.
