武田の出身地である京都府宇治市を舞台に、吹奏楽へ青春を傾ける高校生たちの人間模様が描かれる。あまり練習熱心でなく成績も芳しくなかった架空の公立高校の吹奏楽部員たちが、受験や恋、仲間同士の衝突、親との確執など思春期特有の悩みを抱えつつ、若い新任顧問のもとで吹奏楽コンクールの全国大会出場を目指して奮闘するドラマが軽妙な筆致で展開される。小中学生時代に吹奏楽部へ在籍していた武田は、部活動時代の友人たちや母校である嵯峨野高校の吹奏楽部を取材し、自身の実体験も織り混ぜながら本作の構成を練り上げた。京阪宇治駅やあがた祭り、「大吉山」の通称で知られる仏徳山など、宇治市の名所や行事が作品の随所に登場する。
