The Plot of Terrifier

Terrifier follows two friends, Tara and Dawn, as they encounter Art the Clown on Halloween night. After Art's advances at a pizzeria unnerves Tara, he follows the girls and slashes one of Dawn's car tires. Tara calls her sister Victoria to pick them up, but Art abducts Dawn and forces Tara to watch as he saws her in half with a hacksaw.

Tara manages to escape and batters Art with a 2x4, but he shoots her to death. The Cat Lady, a deluded squatter who lives in a derelict apartment building, witnesses Art and tries to call the police, but no one believes her. Art stalks and kills several other people before he turns his attention to Victoria, who arrives to take her sister and Dawn home.

Victoria discovers Art, who has severely mutilated the Cat Lady and is wearing her scalp and breasts. Art chases Victoria and corners her into a locker, but she manages to escape and grieve upon finding her sister's corpse. Art catches up to her and attacks her with a makeshift cat o' nine tails, but a pest control worker named Mike arrives and knocks Art unconscious. Victoria and Mike flee and call the police, but Art appears and overpowers Mike, killing him. Victoria manages to escape Art but is left severely injured.

The film ends with Art's body being taken to a morgue, where he reanimates and kills the medical examiner. The film then jumps one year later, where Victoria is released from the hospital after being rehabilitated. The film leaves the audience with a chilling reveal about Victoria's fate and the events that took place during that Halloween night.

The Production of Terrifier

Terrifier was written and directed by Damien Leone. The character of Art the Clown first appeared in Leone's 2008 short film, The 9th Circle, before being featured in a short film titled Terrifier in 2011. Both shorts were incorporated into the 2013 anthology film All Hallows' Eve, which marked the character's first feature film appearance and Leone's feature directorial debut.

Leone wrote Terrifier specifically as a means of showcasing Art and his practical effects work, such as the controversial hacksaw death scene. The film was made on a low-budget of $35,000 and had an Indiegogo campaign, although it ultimately did not reach its goal. Leone has expressed regret for leaving the protagonists underdeveloped, but the film received praise for its special effects and the portrayals of Jenna Kanell and David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown.

After being notified of an Indiegogo campaign to finance Terrifier, filmmaker Phil Falcone provided the necessary funds for the project in exchange for a producer credit. Mike Giannelli, who portrayed all prior incarnations of Art, retired from acting before production began, and Thornton replaced him as Art. The film premiered at the Telluride Horror Show Film Festival in October 2016 before being picked up by Dread Central Presents and Epic Pictures for a limited theatrical release in March 2018. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film quickly became a cult classic and spawned a sequel, Terrifier 2, released in 2022.

Cast of Terrifier

David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown: Art is the main antagonist of the film. His character first appeared in Leone's 2011 short film Terrifier. Thornton replaced Mike Giannelli as Art for the feature film. Thornton is also known for his work in Gotham and Nightmare Cinema.

Jenna Kanell as Tara Heyes: Tara is one of the two friends who encounters Art on Halloween night. She is a partygoer who becomes a target of Art. Kanell's other work includes The Bye Bye Man and Max and the Monster.

Samantha Scaffidi as Victoria Heyes: Victoria is Tara's sister who comes to pick her up on Halloween night. She becomes involved in the mayhem caused by Art. Scaffidi's other work includes Don't Look.

Catherine Corcoran as Dawn: Dawn is Tara's friend who is abducted by Art. Corcoran is also known for her work in The Ghost Who Walks and Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 1.

David Lee Madison as Mike: Mike is a pest control worker who gets involved with Art and Tara. Madison is also known for his work in The Hospital and Mr. Hush.

Pooya Mohseni as Cat Lady: Cat Lady is a squatter who lives in a derelict apartment building and encounters Art and Tara. Mohseni is also known for her work in A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

Terrifyingly Good: My Opinion on Terrifier

If you're a fan of slasher movies, then Terrifier is a must-watch. Damien Leone's creation of Art the Clown is nothing short of genius. The practical effects used in the film are top-notch, especially the controversial hacksaw death scene. Leone's low-budget approach to the film-making didn't hamper the quality of the movie and only added to its charm. David Howard Thornton's portrayal of Art the Clown is hauntingly good and has made him a cult horror icon.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the movie's cult following proves it to be a classic in the horror genre. The writing may have been subject to criticism, but it's the portrayal of the characters and the intense horror scenes that make this film stand out. The use of suspense is also commendable, with the final reveal of Victoria's fate being the perfect end to the film.

Terrifier is not for the faint of heart, but if you're brave enough to watch it, you won't be disappointed. It's a horror masterpiece that deserves all of its cult following and more. If you haven't seen it yet, sign up for ExpressVPN to watch it on Netflix and experience the terror for yourself.
