Geostorm: A Summary

Geostorm takes place in a future where the world has been ravaged by natural disasters. In response, a system of climate-controlling satellites called "Dutch Boy" is commissioned by an international coalition. The system is designed to prevent natural disasters by neutralizing them before they can do harm. However, after it neutralizes a typhoon in Shanghai, the chief architect Jake Lawson is reprimanded for bringing Dutch Boy online without authorization. He is replaced by his brother Max, who works under US Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom.

Three years later, after Dutch Boy begins to malfunction, Jake is convinced by Max to investigate the International Climate Space Station (ICSS), where the satellites are controlled. There, they discover that a computer virus has been introduced, causing the malfunctions and wiping out the login access of key senior people to the satellite. Suspecting that the US President is using Dutch Boy as a weapon, Jake tells Max he needs to reboot the system to eliminate the virus, requiring the kill code held by the President.

As Max and Jake work to stop the malfunctioning satellites and prevent a global "Geostorm," they face numerous obstacles, including rogue government agents and a traitor within the ICSS. As they race against time to save the world, they must also confront their own personal demons and the strained dynamic between the two brothers.

The Production of Geostorm

Geostorm is a 2017 science-fiction disaster film directed, co-written, and co-produced by Dean Devlin (in his feature directorial debut). The film stars Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, and Andy García. The movie is particularly notable for its intricate visual effects, which were created by a team of over 1,500 artists.

Development for Geostorm began in 2013, when Skydance Productions purchased the filming rights. After Skydance's distributing partner Paramount Pictures put the project into turnaround, Geostorm was pitched and accepted by Warner Bros. Pre-production began on July 7, 2014, with an initial budget of $82 million. Principal photography began on October 20, 2014, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and lasted through February 10, 2015. Filming began on Loyola Avenue on the first day.

After a series of poor test screenings in December 2015, $15 million reshoots were conducted in Louisiana in early December 2016, under new producer Jerry Bruckheimer, writer Laeta Kalogridis, and director Danny Cannon. Winnick's role was recast with Julia Denton during the reshoots, while new characters were added into the script. Despite the production's troubled history, Geostorm remains a visually stunning and entertaining action movie that explores themes of brotherhood, responsibility, and the consequences of our actions.

Cast

Gerard Butler plays Jake Lawson, the chief architect of the Dutch Boy system who is replaced by his brother Max. Butler is best known for his roles in the films 300, Olympus Has Fallen, and The Phantom of the Opera.

Jim Sturgess plays Max Lawson, Jake's younger brother who takes over as the chief architect of the Dutch Boy system. Sturgess is best known for his roles in the films Across the Universe, Cloud Atlas, and the television series Close to the Enemy.

Abbie Cornish plays Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson, who helps Max acquire the kill code to stop the malfunctioning satellites. Cornish is best known for her roles in the films Sucker Punch, Bright Star, and the television series Jack Ryan.

Ed Harris plays US Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom, who oversees the Dutch Boy system. Harris is a veteran actor who has appeared in numerous films, including Apollo 13, The Truman Show, and The Hours.

Andy García plays U.S. President Andrew Palma, who holds the kill code necessary to stop the Geostorm. García is best known for his roles in the films The Godfather Part III, Ocean's Eleven, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Geostorm also features a talented supporting cast, including Zazie Beetz as Dana, Adepero Oduye as Eni Adisa, and Eugenio Derbez as Hernandez. The film was directed by Dean Devlin, who co-wrote the screenplay with Paul Guyot. Devlin is best known for his work as a producer on such films as Independence Day and Stargate.

Surviving the Geostorm: A Witty Opinion

Geostorm is a visually stunning sci-fi disaster film that explores the consequences of human actions on the environment. The movie presents a thought-provoking concept of climate-controlling satellites that could save the world from catastrophic natural disasters. However, the execution falls short in terms of storytelling and character development.

The plot is predictable and lacks suspense, with most of the twists being telegraphed well in advance. The characters are one-dimensional and underdeveloped, leaving the audience with little emotional investment in their fates. However, the film's impressive visual effects and action sequences make up for its shortcomings to some extent.

Despite receiving negative reviews from critics and underperforming at the box-office, I found Geostorm to be an entertaining movie with an important message about the effects of climate change. While it may not be the most original or well-crafted film in its genre, it still manages to hold the attention of the viewer with its impressive visuals and thrilling set-pieces.

If you're a fan of disaster movies and looking for a fun popcorn flick, Geostorm is definitely worth a watch. And if you're looking to watch Geostorm or any other movie on Netflix that may not be available in your country, sign up for ExpressVPN today to unlock a world of entertainment!
