Set during the political protests of the Saffron Revolution in Burma, "Rambo" follows John Rambo, a retired Vietnam War veteran who is living in Thailand. Rambo is approached by a group of Christian missionaries who need his help in ferrying them up the Salween River into Burma on a humanitarian mission to provide medical aid to a village inhabited by the Karen people.
During the trip, the missionaries are attacked by ruthless SPDC officer Major Pa Tee Tint and his soldiers, who proceed to slaughter innocents, abduct teenage boys to be drafted into his army, and hold women hostage to be raped as sex slaves. Sarah, Michael, and other survivors are taken prisoners, and Rambo is convinced by the missionaries' pastor to guide a team of five mercenaries on a rescue mission. Rambo and the mercenaries make their way to Tint's camp, where they stealthily rescue the surviving hostages.
Tint and his soldiers pursue Rambo and the mercenaries, leading to a final showdown where Rambo uses all his skills and resources to take down Tint and his army. The film ends with Rambo returning to the United States to visit his father at his home in Bowie, Arizona, inspired by Sarah's words.
"Rambo" was directed and co-written by Sylvester Stallone, who also starred in the film as the titular character. It is the fourth installment in the "Rambo" franchise, which was based on the character John Rambo created by author David Morrell for his novel First Blood.
The rights to the "Rambo" franchise were sold to Miramax Films in 1997 after Carolco Pictures went bankrupt. Miramax intended to produce a fourth film, but Stallone was initially unmotivated to reprise the role. The rights were then sold to Nu Image and Millennium Films in 2005, who green-lit the film before the release of "Rocky Balboa" (2006).
Production for "Rambo" began in Thailand, Mexico, and the United States in January 2007 and ended in May 2007. The film received mixed reviews upon its release, with praise aimed at Stallone's direction and performance, action sequences, and musical score, but criticism for its plot, excessively graphic violence, and political commentary. Despite the mixed reviews, the film grossed $113.2 million worldwide against a production budget between $47.5–50 million.
Overall, "Rambo" was a successful continuation of the franchise, showcasing Stallone's continued dedication to the character of John Rambo and his ability to direct and star in action-packed films.
Directed by Sylvester Stallone, "Rambo" stars Stallone himself as John Rambo, a retired Vietnam War veteran who is approached by a group of Christian missionaries to help them on a humanitarian mission in Burma. Stallone is best known for his role as Rocky Balboa in the "Rocky" franchise and has also directed and starred in other action films such as "The Expendables" franchise.
Julie Benz plays Sarah Miller, the fiancée of missionary doctor Michael Burnett. She becomes a hostage of Major Pa Tee Tint's army, leading Rambo and the mercenaries to mount a rescue mission. Benz is best known for her role as Rita Morgan in the TV series "Dexter" and has also appeared in films such as "Jawbreaker" and "Rambo: Last Blood."
Paul Schulze plays Michael Burnett, a missionary doctor who attempts to hire Rambo to ferry his group up the Salween River into Burma. He is taken hostage by Major Pa Tee Tint's army along with Sarah and other survivors. Schulze is best known for his role as Father Phil Intintola in the TV series "The Sopranos" and has also appeared in films such as "Zodiac" and "Panic Room."
Matthew Marsden plays School Boy, one of the mercenaries hired by the missionaries' pastor to mount a rescue mission. He is the team's sniper and helps Rambo and the mercenaries rescue the hostages. Marsden is best known for his role as Corporal Chris Tanner in the film "Black Hawk Down" and has also appeared in TV series such as "DOOL" and "Resident Evil: Extinction."
Graham McTavish plays Lewis, a former SAS soldier and the leader of the mercenaries hired by the missionaries' pastor. He initially refuses Rambo's offer of help but later leads the team on the rescue mission. McTavish is best known for his role as Dwalin in "The Hobbit" trilogy and has also appeared in TV series such as "Outlander" and "Preacher."
Rey Gallegos plays Diaz, one of the mercenaries hired by the missionaries' pastor. He is a former member of the Mexican Federal Police and helps Rambo and the mercenaries mount the rescue mission. Gallegos has appeared in films such as "Harsh Times" and "Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns" and TV series such as "The Mentalist" and "The Shield."
In my opinion, "Rambo" is a disappointing installment in the franchise. While Stallone's performance and direction are commendable, the film suffers from a lackluster plot and excessive violence that detracts from the overall experience. The political commentary feels heavy-handed and at times preachy, taking away from the action sequences that are meant to be the film's main draw.
While the film was met with mixed reviews from critics, I believe that it falls short of the high standards set by the previous films in the series. The plot feels like a rehash of previous action films, and the lack of character development for the supporting cast makes it difficult to connect emotionally with the story.
If you're a fan of the franchise, I recommend sticking to the original "First Blood" instead of "Rambo." While the latter has its moments, it fails to capture the essence of what made the series so iconic in the first place. However, if you're still interested in watching "Rambo," sign up for ExpressVPN to access it on Netflix in Canada, along with many other films and shows you might not be able to access otherwise.
Disclaimer: This is just my opinion, and your experience with the film may differ. However, I believe that if you're looking for a thrilling action movie that doesn't rely solely on excessive violence, there are better options available.
