The Plot of "Big Stan"

"Big Stan" is a 2007 American prison comedy film that tells the story of Stan Minton (Rob Schneider), a wealthy real estate con artist who is arrested for conning elderly people out of their savings. Stan is sentenced to three years in prison, and he spends the six months prior to his sentencing getting trained to survive in prison by a martial arts guru known as "The Master" (David Carradine).

Once in prison, Stan befriends an elderly inmate named Larry (Henry Gibson) and a sympathetic prison guard named Bullard (Kevin Gage). He also learns more about the cliques and gang activities formed inside the prison. Using his new-found martial arts skills and his charm, Stan brings peace and harmony to the prison yard, preventing inmates from harming each other.

However, the corrupt warden Gasque (Scott Wilson) has plans to force the closure of the prison with a riot and sell off the property as valuable real estate. Stan helps him with the real estate aspects in exchange for early parole. However, his peacemaking efforts threaten the warden's plan for a riot, and he is persuaded to bring back violence. The film climaxes with the final showdown between Stan and the corrupt warden, but we won't spoil the ending for you!

The Production of "Big Stan"

"Big Stan" was directed, produced, and starred in by Rob Schneider in his directorial debut, with help from his company From Out of Nowhere Productions. Schneider co-wrote the film's script with Josh Lieb, who had previously worked on "The Daily Show" and "The Simpsons."

One distinctive aspect of the film was the casting of David Carradine, who played "The Master" and helped train Schneider's character in martial arts. Carradine was known for his roles in martial arts films like "Kill Bill" and the television series "Kung Fu." Sadly, "Big Stan" was one of his final roles before his death in 2009.

The film was released straight to DVD in the United States on March 24, 2009, after being released in select markets during the fall of 2008. Despite its limited theatrical run, "Big Stan" gained a cult following and received generally positive reviews from audiences for its comedic take on prison life and Schneider's performance.

While "Big Stan" may not have been a commercial or critical success, it remains a unique entry in the prison comedy genre and showcases Schneider's versatility as an actor and filmmaker.

Big Stan: Small Impact

While "Big Stan" may have had potential with its unique take on the prison comedy genre and talented cast, the execution falls flat. The plot feels disjointed at times, and the humor often falls into crude and tasteless territory. It's clear that the film was trying too hard to be outrageous and over-the-top, but it ultimately misses the mark.

Despite the film's flaws, there are some bright spots. The performance of David Carradine as "The Master" is a highlight, and his scenes with Rob Schneider's character provide some of the film's best moments. Henry Gibson's portrayal of the sympathetic inmate Larry is also noteworthy, as is the film's message of peace and harmony over violence and aggression.

Overall, "Big Stan" is a forgettable film that fails to live up to its potential. While it may appeal to fans of Rob Schneider's brand of humor, it's unlikely to win over anyone else. If you're looking for a prison comedy, there are better options out there.
