The Plot of The Woman King

The Woman King is a historical action drama film that follows the story of General Nanisca, the leader of the all-female warrior unit, the Agojie. In the 1820s in the West African kingdom of Dahomey, General Nanisca leads her warriors to liberate Dahomean women who were abducted by slavers from the Oyo Empire. This act provokes King Ghezo of Dahomey to prepare for an all-out war with the Oyo.

As General Nanisca trains the next generation of Agojie warriors to protect the kingdom, a young girl named Nawi joins the warrior unit. Nawi is strong-willed and refuses to marry men who would beat her, causing her father to offer her to the king. Nawi befriends veteran Agojie warrior Izogie, who reveals to Nanisca that Nawi is adopted and shows a scar on her left shoulder that shocks Nanisca.

Portuguese slave traders arrive, led by Santo Ferreira and accompanied by the half-Dahomean Malik, as part of an alliance with the Oyo, led by General Oba Ade. Nawi encounters Malik and the two become friends. When Nawi graduates from her Agojie training, she sneaks off to warn Malik that the Oyo are planning to attack. Nanisca reveals that she was captured by Oba in her youth, raped, and impregnated. After giving birth to a daughter, Nanisca embedded a shark tooth in her left shoulder before giving her away. As the story unfolds, Nawi must navigate her relationship with Malik and her newfound knowledge of her past and familial relationships.

The Production of The Woman King

The Woman King is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Dana Stevens, based on a story she wrote with Maria Bello. Viola Davis stars as General Nanisca alongside Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega. The film was inspired by the Agojie, the all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey.

The idea for the film was originally conceived by Maria Bello in 2015 after visiting Benin, where the kingdom of Dahomey used to be located. Bello recruited Cathy Schulman to develop the idea into a feature film and pitched it to several studios, but it was initially turned down due to financial concerns. However, after they met with TriStar Pictures in 2017, the film was greenlit in 2020.

Production of The Woman King began in South Africa in November 2021 but was shut down due to the COVID-19 Omicron variant a few weeks later. Production resumed in early 2022, with Polly Morgan as the cinematographer. During post-production, the musical score was composed by Terence Blanchard, and editing was completed by Terilyn A. Shropshire.

The Woman King premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2022, and received positive reviews from critics, with praise directed towards Viola Davis's performance and the action choreography. However, the film also received criticism for historical distortion of slavery. The film has received nominations for multiple awards, including Best Costume Design, Best Acting Ensemble, Best Director, and Best Actress for Davis at the 28th Critics' Choice Awards.
