The Plot of Coraline

Coraline Jones is a young girl who moves with her workaholic parents to a new home in the Pink Palace Apartments. She meets the landlady's grandson and a black cat, who leads her to a small door with a bricked-up wall behind it. Coraline discovers that the door is a portal to a parallel universe where she meets button-eyed doppelgängers of her parents who seem more attentive and caring than her real parents. However, Coraline soon realizes that this Other World is not what it seems, and she must find a way to escape before it's too late.

Coraline makes several visits to the Other World, where she meets the cat and the dimension's doppelgängers of her neighbors. She also discovers that the Other Mother wants to sew buttons over her eyes and keep her in the Other World permanently. Coraline must find a way to escape before the Other Mother traps her in a room behind a mirror.

Coraline uncovers the truth about the Other World and the Beldam, who has kidnapped her parents. She proposes a game to the Beldam: if she can find her parents and the essences of the ghosts' souls, they will all go free. However, if she fails, she will finally accept the Beldam's offer to stay in the Other World permanently. Coraline must find the souls' essences and return them to their rightful owners before it's too late. Will Coraline be able to save herself and her family from the clutches of the Beldam?

The Production of Coraline

Coraline is a 2009 American stop-motion animated dark fantasy horror film produced by Laika as the studio's first feature film. Directed by Henry Selick and based on Neil Gaiman's novella of the same name, the film features the voice talents of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Keith David, John Hodgman, Robert Bailey Jr., and Ian McShane.

The production of Coraline involved the efforts of 450 people, including 30 to 35 animators and digital designers in the Digital Design Group (DDG), directed by Dan Casey, and more than 250 technicians and designers. To capture stereoscopy for the 3D release, the animators shot each frame from two slightly apart camera positions, resulting in a stunning 3D effect.

One interesting aspect of the film's production was the use of 3D printing technology to create thousands of high-quality 3D models that ranged from facial expressions to doorknobs. The puppets had separate parts for the upper and lower parts of the head that could be exchanged for different facial expressions, and the characters of Coraline could potentially exhibit over 208,000 facial expressions. The crew also used three 3D printing systems from Objet in the development and production of the film.

Coraline was critically acclaimed and received nominations for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. The film has since developed a cult following and is considered a classic of stop-motion animation. Coraline's unique blend of dark fantasy and horror, coupled with its stunning visuals and talented voice cast, make it a must-watch for fans of the genre.

Cast of Coraline

Dakota Fanning voices Coraline, a curious and adventurous young girl who discovers a secret door to an alternate world. Fanning is an American actress known for her roles in War of the Worlds, The Cat in the Hat, and the Twilight saga.

Teri Hatcher voices the Other Mother, a twisted version of Coraline's mother who wants to keep Coraline in the alternate world forever. Hatcher is an American actress known for her roles in Desperate Housewives, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Tomorrow Never Dies.

Keith David voices the Cat, a mysterious feline who guides Coraline throughout her journey. David is an American actor known for his roles in The Thing, They Live, and Gargoyles.

Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French voice Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, two elderly actresses who live in the Pink Palace Apartments. They provide Coraline with valuable information about the history of the Other World. Saunders and French are British actresses known for their work in Absolutely Fabulous, French and Saunders, and The Vicar of Dibley.

Henry Selick serves as the director of Coraline. Selick is an American stop-motion animator, director, and producer known for his work on The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, and Monkeybone.

Through the Hidden Door: A Dark and Thrilling Tale

As someone who loves both animation and horror, Coraline was a real treat for me. The stop-motion animation is stunning, and the attention to detail in the sets and characters is impressive. The story is both dark and thrilling, taking viewers on a journey to a sinister parallel universe that's hard to forget.

The voice cast is fantastic, with Dakota Fanning delivering a strong performance as the curious and brave Coraline. Teri Hatcher is chilling as the Other Mother, and Keith David's voice is perfectly suited for the mysterious and wise Cat. The supporting cast, including Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French, adds to the film's charm and eccentricity.

While the movie is marketed as a family film, it's definitely not for young children. The themes are mature and the imagery can be unsettling, making it more suitable for older children and adults. However, if you're a fan of horror and animation, Coraline is a must-see.

Despite its critical acclaim and cult following, Coraline may not be for everyone. If you're not a fan of horror or dark fantasy, it may not be your cup of tea. But for those who enjoy a good scare and appreciate the artistry of stop-motion animation, Coraline is a gem.

If you haven't seen Coraline yet, I highly recommend it. And if you're having trouble accessing it in your country, consider signing up for ExpressVPN. With ExpressVPN, you can easily unlock Coraline and many other great movies on Netflix Canada and other regions. Don't miss out on this dark and thrilling tale.
