Plot Summary

Leave No Trace follows the story of Will, a military veteran with PTSD, who lives in the woods of Forest Park, Oregon with his daughter Tom. They live in isolation and rely on Will's survival skills to get by. When a jogger spots Tom in the woods, they are detained by social services and given a new home on a Christmas tree farm in exchange for Will's work.

Will struggles to adjust to their new home and the constant monitoring by social services. One day, he decides to leave and Tom reluctantly follows. The two embark on a journey that takes them through different states, as they try to find a place that feels like home.

The film is a touching exploration of the bond between a father and daughter, and the lengths one will go to protect their loved ones. It also sheds light on the struggles of veterans dealing with PTSD, and the difficulties of adjusting to civilian life after serving in the military.

Production and Reception

Leave No Trace is directed by Debra Granik, who is known for her work on Winter's Bone (2010) and Down to the Bone (2004). The film is based on the 2009 novel My Abandonment by Peter Rock, which is in turn based on a true story. The screenplay was written by Granik and Anne Rosellini.

The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim. Upon its release, the film was praised for its performances, particularly those of Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie, and its realistic portrayal of PTSD and its effects on veterans and their families. Leave No Trace currently holds a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film is notable for its use of actual locations instead of sets, which adds to the movie's authenticity. The production team worked closely with the park rangers in Forest Park to ensure that they were respectful of the environment and the wildlife.
