What is "Your Name." About?

"Your Name." is a story about two high school students, Taki and Mitsuha, who find themselves mysteriously swapping bodies. Despite living in different parts of Japan and never having met each other before, they begin to experience each other's lives and all of the challenges that come with them. They communicate with each other by leaving messages on paper, phones, and even on each other's skin.

The two teenagers quickly learn to navigate the challenges of living in each other's bodies, such as trying to maintain relationships and keeping up with schoolwork. However, things become more complicated when they realize that their body-swapping is connected to a catastrophic event that is about to take place. As they work to unravel the mystery and prevent disaster, Taki and Mitsuha begin to develop a deeper connection that defies time and space.

Despite its fantastical elements, at its core, "Your Name." is a story about the human connection and the power of destiny. It's a beautiful, emotional journey that will leave you captivated and moved.

The Creation of "Your Name."

"Your Name." is a 2016 Japanese animated film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. The idea for the story came to Shinkai after he visited Yuriage, Natori, Miyagi Prefecture in July 2011, after the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred. He wanted to create a movie that would swap the positions of the people in Yuriage with the viewers. The sketches he drew during his visit have been shown in exhibitions.

Shinkai announced that he had been spending his days writing storyboard for the film on December 31, 2014. Inspiration for the story came from works including Shūzō Oshimi's "Inside Mari," Rumiko Takahashi's "Ranma ½," the Heian period novel "Torikaebaya Monogatari," and Greg Egan's short story "The Safe-Deposit Box." Shinkai also cited Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" as an influence.

The film was commissioned in 2014 and produced by CoMix Wave Films. It features the voices of Ryunosuke Kamiki and Mone Kamishiraishi, with animation direction by Masashi Ando, character design by Masayoshi Tanaka, and an orchestral score and soundtrack composed by Radwimps. The film was critically acclaimed, with praise for its story, animation, music, visuals, and emotional weight. It grossed over ¥41.44 billion (US$382 million) worldwide, breaking numerous box office records, including becoming the third highest-grossing anime film of all time, unadjusted for inflation.

The success of "Your Name." led to a live-action American remake by Paramount Pictures that is currently in development. The film received several accolades, including the Best Animated Feature at the 2016 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, the 49th Sitges Film Festival, and the 71st Mainichi Film Awards; it was also nominated for the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year.
