The Plot of Everything Everywhere All at Once

Everything Everywhere All at Once follows Evelyn Quan Wang, a Chinese-American immigrant who runs a laundromat with her husband Waymond. One day, while being audited by the IRS, Waymond's body is taken over by Alpha-Waymond, a version of Waymond from an alternate universe. Alpha-Waymond explains to Evelyn that the multiverse is threatened by Jobu Tupaki, a version of Evelyn's daughter from another universe, who has created a black hole-like "everything bagel" that could destroy the multiverse.

Evelyn is given verse-jumping technology to fight Jobu's minions, and she discovers other universes in which she made different choices and flourished, like becoming a kung fu master and film star. Alpha-Waymond believes that Evelyn, as the greatest "failure" of all Evelyns in the multiverse, has the untapped potential to defeat Jobu. Gong Gong, Evelyn's father, is taken over by Alpha-Gong Gong, who instructs Evelyn to kill Joy to stop Jobu from using her to enter Evelyn's universe. Evelyn refuses and decides to face Jobu by gaining powers through repeated verse-jumping.

Evelyn and Jobu confront each other in a battle that takes them across diverse and bizarre universes. The movie explores philosophical concepts such as existentialism, nihilism, absurdism, and themes like neurodivergence, depression, generational trauma, and Asian American identity. The film ends in a heartwarming and uplifting way that emphasizes the importance of empathy and human connection.

Evelyn Quan Wang is the Multidimensional Hero We Need

Everything Everywhere All at Once is a wild ride that defies genre conventions and delivers a unique cinematic experience. The film's creative team successfully blends elements of absurdist fiction, science fiction, martial arts films, and immigrant narratives to create a story that is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. Michelle Yeoh's performance as Evelyn Quan Wang is outstanding, and the supporting cast is equally impressive.

The film explores complex themes such as identity, mental health, and the nature of reality. It's a challenging watch that requires the viewer to be open-minded and engaged. The philosophical concepts at the core of the plot are handled well, and the film never feels preachy or overly didactic.

While the film's critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive, I do acknowledge that it may not be everyone's cup of tea. It's a dense and complex film that requires a significant investment of time and attention from the viewer. However, I believe that the payoff is worth the effort.

Overall, I highly recommend Everything Everywhere All at Once for those who are looking for a unique and challenging viewing experience. It's a refreshing departure from the cookie-cutter blockbusters that dominate the box office, and it's a testament to the power of cinema to push boundaries and challenge viewers.
