The Plot of "Renfield"

"Renfield" tells the story of the titular character, R.M. Renfield, who becomes the familiar of Transylvanian vampire Count Dracula. Renfield gains immortality, super strength, and speed when he consumes bugs. However, after years of bringing victims to Dracula and being subjected to his abuse, Renfield grows weary and exhausted. The duo moves to New Orleans to recuperate, where Renfield discovers a 12-step self-help group for people in codependent relationships. Renfield plans to hunt out the group's abusive lovers so he can kill and give them to Dracula to feast on without feeling remorse.

Things get complicated when Renfield is confronted by several criminals, and an assassin hired by the rival Lobo crime family attacks them all. Renfield ends up dragging the corpses back to Dracula's lair in the basement of the dilapidated Charity Hospital. Meanwhile, a second-generation police officer named Rebecca Quincy is investigating the crime scene and is led to a restaurant where Renfield and Dracula plan to abduct commoners for food. The two are caught in an attack on Rebecca's life, and they defend themselves, killing several gang members and leading to a confrontation with Teddy Lobo, a member of the rival crime family.

As the story unfolds, Renfield tries to reform himself while Dracula desires the blood of someone pure and innocent. Rebecca and Renfield fight through a group of corrupt police officers and Lobo henchmen to stop Dracula and Bellafrancesca, Teddy's mother. They make a final stand against Dracula in a magical circle, leading to a confrontation that ends with Renfield and Rebecca collaborating to capture him. The story ultimately explores themes of codependency, abuse, and redemption in a comedic horror setting.

The Production of "Renfield"

"Renfield" is a 2023 American comedy horror film directed and produced by Chris McKay, known for his work on "The Lego Batman Movie" and "The Tomorrow War." The screenplay was written by Ryan Ridley, known for his work on "Rick and Morty," from a story by Robert Kirkman, who also served as producer. Kirkman is best known as the creator of the comic book series "The Walking Dead."

"Renfield" was inspired by characters from the 1897 novel "Dracula" by Bram Stoker but takes a comedic approach to the classic monster universe. The film stars Nicholas Hoult as Renfield, Awkwafina as Dracula's wife, Ben Schwartz as Teddy Lobo, Shohreh Aghdashloo as Bellafrancesca Lobo, Brandon Scott Jones as Dr. Seward, Adrian Martinez as Van Helsing, and Nicolas Cage in an undisclosed role.

The film entered development hell after the commercial failure of "The Mummy" in 2017. However, Kirkman pitched a new version of the film to the studio, leaning more into the comedic aspects of the story. The production rights were acquired by Skybound Entertainment, Kirkman's production company. Dexter Fletcher was originally announced as the director in 2019, but McKay eventually replaced him, working off the Ridley script and Kirkman's original pitch.

"Renfield" had its world premiere at the Overlook Film Festival on March 30, 2023, and was released in the United States on April 14, 2023, by Universal Pictures. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for the comedic tone and performances but criticism for the screenplay and story.

Overall, "Renfield" offers a fresh take on the classic monster universe, blending horror and comedy with a talented cast and crew. The film's production was marked by significant changes, but ultimately resulted in a unique and entertaining addition to the genre.

Renfield: A Bloody Mess

As a fan of horror-comedy, I was excited to watch "Renfield." Unfortunately, the film fell flat for me. While the cast gave strong performances, the messy plot and underdeveloped characters left much to be desired.

The film's attempts at humor often felt forced and misplaced, taking away from the horror elements that could have been more effectively utilized. Additionally, the pacing and editing felt choppy, making the film difficult to follow at times.

Despite these flaws, I can see why some viewers may enjoy "Renfield" for its quirky take on classic horror characters. However, as someone who was looking for a more cohesive and engaging story, I was ultimately disappointed.

While I can't recommend "Renfield" to others, I do invite viewers to sign up for ExpressVPN to watch the film, as well as unlock many other movies and shows on Netflix. Who knows, perhaps it will be more enjoyable for others than it was for me!
