The Plot of "Rambo"

"Rambo" follows John Rambo, a Vietnam War veteran who is living in Thailand and working as a snake catcher and boatman. He is approached by a group of missionaries who ask him to take them up the Salween River into Burma on a humanitarian mission to provide medical aid to a village inhabited by the Karen people. Rambo initially refuses, but eventually agrees when convinced by Michael's fiancée Sarah Miller.

During their journey, the group is attacked by pirates and later by Major Pa Tee Tint's forces. Sarah, Michael, and other survivors are taken prisoners, and the pastor of the missionaries' church asks Rambo to guide a team of five mercenaries on a rescue mission. As they make their way to Tint's camp, they encounter a group of prisoners who are being tormented by Tint's soldiers. Rambo arrives in time to free the hostages and joins the mercenaries on their mission.

After a difficult battle, Rambo and the mercenaries rescue the hostages and attempt to escape, but Tint and his soldiers pursue them. Rambo launches a surprise attack on Tint's men, allowing the mercenaries to engage them. The Karen rebels, led by Myint, arrive and help to overwhelm Tint's soldiers and their arriving naval forces. In the end, Rambo returns to the United States to visit his father at his home in Bowie, Arizona.

The Production of "Rambo"

"Rambo" was directed and co-written by Sylvester Stallone, who also played the lead role of John Rambo. The film is the fourth installment in the Rambo franchise and was released 20 years after the previous film, "Rambo III." The script was based on the character John Rambo created by author David Morrell for his novel "First Blood."

The rights to the Rambo franchise were sold to Miramax Films in 1997 after Carolco Pictures went bankrupt. Miramax intended to produce a fourth film, but Stallone was initially unmotivated to reprise the role. The rights were then sold to Nu Image and Millennium Films in 2005, who green-lit the film before the release of Stallone's other comeback film, "Rocky Balboa," in 2006.

"Rambo" was filmed in Thailand, Mexico, and the United States between January and May 2007. The film features graphic violence and political commentary, which received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. However, Stallone's direction and performance, action sequences, and musical score were praised.

The film grossed $113.2 million worldwide against a production budget of $47.5–50 million. A sequel, "Rambo: Last Blood," was released in 2019, which saw Stallone reprising his role as John Rambo for the fifth and final time.

Stallone is known for his roles in the "Rocky" and "Expendables" franchises, as well as "Escape Plan" and "Demolition Man."

Julie Benz plays Sarah Miller, Michael's fiancée and one of the missionaries Rambo helps to rescue. Benz is known for her roles in "Dexter," "Defiance," and "Desperate Housewives."

Paul Schulze plays Michael Burnett, a missionary doctor who hires Rambo to ferry his group up the Salween River into Burma. Schulze is known for his roles in "The Sopranos," "Nurse Jackie," and "Panic Room."

Matthew Marsden plays School Boy, one of the mercenaries hired to rescue the hostages. Marsden is known for his roles in "Black Hawk Down," "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," and "Resident Evil: Extinction."

Graham McTavish plays Lewis, a former SAS soldier and the leader of the mercenaries. McTavish is known for his roles in "The Hobbit" trilogy, "Outlander," and "Preacher."

Rey Gallegos plays Diaz, one of the mercenaries hired to rescue the hostages. Gallegos is known for his roles in "American Sniper," "Bad Boys II," and "Harsh Times."

Other notable cast members include Tim Kang as En-Joo, Jake La Botz as Reese, Maung Maung Khin as Tint's aide, and Ken Howard as Arthur Marsh.

Is "Rambo" Worth the Watch?

"Rambo" is a movie that will appeal to fans of the franchise and those who enjoy action-packed films. The film has its moments of excitement, particularly during the numerous battle scenes, and Sylvester Stallone's performance is impressive. However, the plot is weak, the violence is excessive and disturbing, and the political commentary feels forced and unnecessary.

While the film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences, my opinion is that it's not worth the watch. The action may be thrilling, but the story is lacking and the excessive violence can be off-putting. Additionally, the political commentary feels out of place and doesn't add anything meaningful to the film.

If you do choose to watch "Rambo," I recommend using ExpressVPN to unlock the movie on Netflix in Canada. In addition to "Rambo," ExpressVPN can unlock many more movies and shows that may not be available in your region. Sign up for ExpressVPN today to start streaming your favorite content!
