Biography

Barry Jenkins is an award-winning writer and director based in San Francisco. He is best known for writing and directing the 2016 film Moonlight, which won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The website ‘They Shoot Pictures, Don't They?’ lists Moonlight as the 22nd most acclaimed film of the 21st century. His following film, ‘If Beale Street Could Talk,’ was also met with critical acclaim and was nominated for three Academy Awards, winning one. His feature film debut, Medicine for Melancholy, was released in theaters by IFC Films and hailed as one of the best films of 2009 by A.O. Scott of The New York Times. Filmmaker also named Jenkins one of their “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” Other projects include the shorts Tall Enough and A Young Couple, and the television series ‘The Underground Railroad.’
