What is "The Untamed" About?

"The Untamed" follows the adventures of two soulmate cultivators, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, who travel to solve a series of mysteries that link to a tragic event in the past. Set in a world of magic and martial arts, the story begins with Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji meeting as teenagers and becoming close friends after experiencing many adventures together.

However, after a series of disastrous events, Wei Wuxian is forced to give away his spiritual power to save the life of his martial brother, Jiang Cheng. He is then tortured and thrown into the Burial Mounds by the Wen Sect, from where he returns after three months as a man practicing demonic cultivation, which is considered a dark art. Despite Lan Wangji's attempts to persuade him to give up practicing demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian continues down this path, causing him to lose his reputation and be ostracized by many.

The series then follows Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji as they try to solve mysteries and reveal what happened in the past, leading to tragic consequences that have haunted them both for years.

The Production of "The Untamed"

"The Untamed" is a 2019 Chinese television series adapted from the popular danmei novel Mo Dao Zu Shi by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. The show was directed by Tencent Penguin Pictures and NewStyle Media Group, and starred Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo in the leading roles of Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji.

The series was a critical and commercial success both locally and internationally, with praise for its strong plot, well-rounded characters, and elaborate clothing and makeup. However, it's worth noting that while the original web novel depicted an explicit romance between the two main male characters, the adaptation was censored with homoerotic subtexts instead due to China's ban on LGBT portrayals in films.

"The Untamed" has garnered a massive following since its release, with the show's popularity leading to the release of two spin-off movies focusing on the supporting characters. The show has also spawned a mobile game based on the series set to be released by NetEase Games.
