The Plot of "The Woman King"

Set in the 19th century, "The Woman King" follows the story of Nanisca, the general of the Agojie, a group of fierce female warriors who fight to protect the kingdom of Dahomey from invaders and enslavers. When Nanisca liberates a group of women from the Oyo Empire, a war between the two kingdoms looms on the horizon.

As she prepares for battle, Nanisca trains a new generation of warriors, including Nawi, a strong-willed young woman who joins the Agojie after being offered to the king by her father. Alongside her fellow warriors, Nawi fights for her people and discovers the truth about her past.

With stunning action sequences, powerful performances, and a gripping story, "The Woman King" is a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

The Making of "The Woman King"

The idea for "The Woman King" was developed by Maria Bello after she visited Benin and learned about the Agojie, a group of women who protected the kingdom of Dahomey. Bello recruited Cathy Schulman to help pitch the idea to studios, but it was turned down due to financial concerns.

Eventually, the project was greenlit by TriStar Pictures in 2020, with Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, and Lashana Lynch cast in the lead roles. The film was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Dana Stevens, based on a story by Bello and Stevens.

Production began in South Africa in November 2021 but was shut down due to the COVID-19 Omicron variant. It resumed in early 2022, with Polly Morgan serving as the cinematographer and Terence Blanchard composing the score. "The Woman King" premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022, where it received positive reviews from critics.
