The Making of Terrifier

Terrifier was written and directed by Damien Leone, who also created the character of Art the Clown. The film was shot on a low budget of $35,000, and Leone used practical effects to create the movie's gore and violence. The film premiered at the Telluride Horror Show Film Festival in 2016 and was later picked up for distribution by Dread Central Presents and Epic Pictures.

One interesting aspect of the production is that the character of Art the Clown was played by two different actors. Mike Giannelli originally portrayed Art in the short films and anthology movie that preceded Terrifier, but he chose not to return for the feature-length film. David Howard Thornton was then cast as Art and brought his own unique take on the character, including adding his own improvised kill scene in his audition.

The film received mixed reviews upon release, with some praising Leone's direction and the performances of the cast, particularly Thornton as Art. However, others criticized the writing and character development of the film's protagonists. Despite the mixed reception, Terrifier quickly gained a cult following and has since become a cult classic in the horror genre. This success led to the release of a sequel, Terrifier 2, in 2022.

Cast of Terrifier

David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown: The film's main antagonist, Art is a highly skilled and sadistic killer who terrorizes Tara, Dawn, and Vicky on Halloween night. David Howard Thornton brought his own unique take on the character, adding his own improvised kill scene in his audition. Thornton has also appeared in other horror films, including the 2018 remake of The Night of the Living Dead.

Jenna Kanell as Tara Heyes: One of the film's protagonists, Tara is a partygoer who becomes the target of Art's violence. Kanell's other acting credits include the TV series Living the Dream and the film Max Winslow and the House of Secrets.

Samantha Scaffidi as Victoria Heyes: Tara's sister and the other protagonist of the film, Vicky is called upon to help Tara and Dawn when they encounter Art. Scaffidi has also appeared in the film The Last Hope and the TV series The Deuce.

Catherine Corcoran as Dawn: One of the partygoers who encounters Art, Dawn becomes one of his victims. Corcoran has also appeared in the films Return to Nuke 'Em High and The Ranger.

Pooya Mohseni as Cat Lady: A deluded squatter who lives in the apartment building where Tara encounters Art, the Cat Lady believes that a doll she carries is her infant child. Mohseni has also appeared in the films A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and The Bad Batch.

Mike Giannelli as The Clown (archive footage): Giannelli played Art the Clown in the short films and anthology movie that preceded Terrifier. Though he did not reprise the role in the feature-length film, his earlier performances helped establish the character's popularity.

Art the Clown: A Killer Performance

I have to say, Terrifier was an absolute masterpiece in the horror genre. The practical effects were top-notch, and the character of Art the Clown was truly chilling. David Howard Thornton's performance as Art was nothing short of amazing, and he brought a new level of terror to the character. The infamous hacksaw scene will forever be etched in my memory as one of the most disturbing moments in horror history.

While some critics may have criticized the lack of character development for the protagonists, I believe that Terrifier succeeded in its goal of showcasing Art the Clown and delivering on the gore and scares. It's not often that a low-budget horror film can stand out in such a crowded genre, but Terrifier managed to do just that.

If you're a fan of horror movies and haven't seen Terrifier yet, I highly recommend it. You can stream it on Netflix with ExpressVPN, which will unlock a whole world of horror movies and TV shows from around the world. So sign up for ExpressVPN today and get ready to be scared!
