The Plot of Green Book

Green Book is a biographical comedy-drama set in the early 1960s. The story follows the journey of Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a talented African American pianist, and his Italian American driver and bouncer Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen) as they embark on an eight-week concert tour through the Deep South.

As they travel, Tony is struck by the discriminatory treatment that Don receives both on and offstage. Together, they navigate the racial tensions of the time, using the "Negro Motorist Green Book" to find safe places for Don to stay, eat, and perform in the Jim Crow South.

Throughout the tour, the two men form a bond that challenges their preconceived notions about race and class. Green Book is a heartwarming story of friendship and understanding that celebrates the power of human connection.

The Making of Green Book

Directed by Peter Farrelly, Green Book was co-written by Farrelly, Brian Hayes Currie, and Nick Vallelonga, the son of Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga, who served as the inspiration for the character played by Viggo Mortensen.

The film was inspired by the true story of Don Shirley's concert tour of the Deep South and his unlikely friendship with Tony Lip. To prepare for his role, Mortensen gained 40-50 pounds and learned to speak with a New York accent. Meanwhile, Ali, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Shirley, took piano lessons and was coached by composer Kris Bowers.

Green Book premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018, where it won the People's Choice Award. The film was released in the United States in November 2018 and grossed over $320 million worldwide. It received critical acclaim for its performances, writing, and direction, although it also drew some criticism for its handling of race and its depiction of Shirley.
