The Plot of Black Adam

Black Adam follows the story of an ancient superhuman named Teth-Adam, who is released from his magic imprisonment by a group of archaeologists looking to free the nation of Kahndaq from the crime syndicate Intergang. The local leader of Intergang plans to obtain an ancient relic called the Crown of Sabbac to take control of the nation. Adam, alongside resistance-fighter Adrianna Tomaz and the Justice Society of America, embarks on a mission to stop Intergang and save Kahndaq.

However, as the mission progresses, Adam and Adrianna discover that the legends of Kahndaq's champion were misattributed. Instead, it was Adam's son, Hurut, who was granted Shazam's powers and became Kahndaq's champion. Knowing that Hurut was invincible, the tyrannical king Ahk-Ton instructed assassins to execute Hurut's family, including Adam and Hurut's mother. Hurut gave Adam his powers to save his life, but Ahk-Ton's assassins immediately killed the de-powered Hurut, causing an enraged Adam to massacre all of the king's men and inadvertently destroy his palace. As a result, Adam is deemed unworthy by the Council of Wizards and imprisoned along with the Crown of Sabbac within what became Adam's tomb.

Throughout the film, Adam struggles with his inner demons and guilt over his past actions. He must confront his past mistakes and decide whether to embrace his powers for good or use them for personal gain. Alongside the Justice Society, Adam battles against the rising threat of the Crown of Sabbac and Sabbac's demonic army, all while trying to save the people of Kahndaq and redeem himself in the eyes of the world.

The Making of "Black Adam": From Development to Release

"Black Adam" was produced by New Line Cinema, DC Films, Seven Bucks Productions, and FlynnPictureCo, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is a spin-off from "Shazam!" (2019) and the 11th film in the DC Extended Universe. The movie was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani.

The film's main star, Dwayne Johnson, was attached to "Shazam!" early in development and confirmed to portray the villain Black Adam in September 2014. However, at Johnson's urging, the producers later decided to give the character his own film. Sztykiel was hired in October 2017 to write the screenplay, and Collet-Serra joined the project in June 2019 as director. The original planned release date was December 2021, but like many other films, it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the most interesting aspects of the production was the casting of the Justice Society of America, a team of iconic DC Comics characters who appear alongside Black Adam in the film. Actors Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, and Quintessa Swindell were all cast in the roles of Hawkman, Atom Smasher, Isis, and Cyclone, respectively. The film also marks the first time Pierce Brosnan has appeared in a comic book movie as Dr. Fate.

Upon its release, "Black Adam" received mixed reviews from critics and was labeled a box office bomb due to marketing and distribution costs. However, the film still managed to gross $393 million worldwide. Despite the mixed reception, fans were excited to see Dwayne Johnson take on the role of Black Adam and the film's unique take on the character's backstory and mythology.
