The Plot of "Rambo"

"Rambo" is an action-packed film that takes place during the political protests of the Saffron Revolution in Burma. John Rambo, a Vietnam War veteran, is living in Thailand and making a living as a snake catcher and providing boat rides. He is approached by a missionary doctor named Michael Burnett, who hires Rambo to ferry his group up the Salween River into Burma on a humanitarian mission to provide medical aid to a village inhabited by the Karen people.

During the trip, the boat is stopped by pirates demanding Sarah, Michael's fiancée, in exchange for passage. This forces Rambo to kill them. When they arrive at the village, they are attacked by ruthless SPDC officer Major Pa Tee Tint's forces, and Sarah, Michael, and other survivors are taken prisoners. The pastor of the missionaries' church then asks Rambo to guide a team of five mercenaries on a rescue mission.

Rambo and the mercenaries make their way to Tint's camp, where they stealthily rescue the surviving hostages. However, Tint and his soldiers pursue them, leading to an intense fight scene. The Karen rebels, led by Myint, also join the fight, helping to overwhelm Tint's soldiers. In the end, Rambo is inspired by Sarah's words and decides to return to the United States to visit his father at his home in Bowie, Arizona.

The Production of "Rambo"

"Rambo" is the fourth installment in the Rambo franchise and was directed and co-written by Sylvester Stallone. The film was produced by Nu Image and Millennium Films, and the rights to the franchise were sold to these companies in 2005. The movie was filmed in Thailand, Mexico, and the United States and was dedicated to the memory of Richard Crenna, who played Colonel Sam Trautman in the previous films and passed away in 2003.

The film received mixed reviews upon its release, with praise directed towards Stallone's direction and performance, action sequences, and musical score. However, it also received criticism for its plot, excessively graphic violence, and political commentary. Despite mixed reviews, "Rambo" grossed $113.2 million worldwide against a production budget between $47.5–50 million.

The film is notable for its depiction of the conflict in Burma and the human rights abuses committed by the ruling military junta. In an interview, Stallone stated that he wanted to use the film to raise awareness about the situation in Burma and to highlight the work of the Karen people, a persecuted ethnic group in the country.

Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo:

Stallone not only starred in the film but also directed and co-wrote the screenplay. In "Rambo", he reprised his iconic role as John Rambo, a Vietnam War veteran who is recruited to lead a group of mercenaries on a mission to rescue Christian missionaries. Stallone is also known for his roles in other action films like the "Rocky" and "Expendables" franchises.

Julie Benz as Sarah Miller:

Benz played the role of Sarah Miller, Michael Burnett's fiancée, in "Rambo". She is taken hostage by Major Pa Tee Tint's forces and is rescued by Rambo and the mercenaries. Benz is also known for her roles in popular TV shows like "Dexter" and "Hawaii Five-0".

Surviving "Rambo": A Disappointing Action Film

As a fan of action movies, I was excited to watch "Rambo". However, I was disappointed with this fourth installment of the franchise. While the film had some impressive action sequences and Stallone's performance was commendable, the plot was weak and the excessive violence felt gratuitous.

The film's political commentary on the conflict in Burma was also heavy-handed and did not add much to the story. While I appreciate Stallone's efforts to raise awareness about the situation, it felt like an afterthought and did not fully explore the complexities of the issue.

Overall, "Rambo" failed to live up to my expectations. While it may have been popular with die-hard fans of the franchise, I cannot recommend it to casual moviegoers. If you still want to watch it, you can sign up for ExpressVPN to access it on Netflix in Canada and unlock many other titles.
