Plot Summary of Geostorm

Geostorm is a science-fiction disaster film that takes place in the near future, where a catastrophic series of natural disasters have led to the creation of a global network of climate-controlling satellites called "Dutch Boy." After a US Senate subcommittee reprimands the chief architect, Jake Lawson, for bringing Dutch Boy online without authorization, his brother Max replaces him. Three years later, a UN team stationed in the Registan Desert discovers a frozen village, and an Indian engineer working on the International Climate Space Station (ICSS) copies data from the satellite responsible for Afghanistan before he is killed in an accident.

After convincing the U.S. President to conduct an investigation, Max persuades Jake to go to the ICSS to investigate. Jake arrives at the ICSS to examine the malfunctioning satellites, which were damaged and their data erased. He works with the station commander and her crew, who recover the hard drive but hide it from the crew, suspecting a traitor. Examining the data leads to the discovery that a computer virus has been introduced, causing the malfunctions and wiping out the login access of key senior people to the satellite.

Suspecting that Dutch Boy is being used as a weapon, Jake tells Max that he needs to reboot the system to eliminate the virus, requiring the kill code held by the President. With disasters striking around the world, Jake and his team must race against time to prevent a "Geostorm" from destroying the planet.

The Making of Geostorm

Geostorm was directed, co-written, and co-produced by Dean Devlin, who made his feature directorial debut with the film. The movie stars Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, and Andy García. Principal photography began on October 20, 2014, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and lasted through February 10, 2015.

After poor test screenings in December 2015, $15 million reshoots were conducted in Louisiana in early December 2016 under executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer, writer Laeta Kalogridis, and new director Danny Cannon. During these reshoots, some of the roles were recast, and new characters were added to the script.

Geostorm was released in the United States on October 20, 2017, and grossed only $221.6 million worldwide against a $120‒130 million budget, losing Warner Bros. $71.6 million. The film was panned by critics, who criticized its storytelling and visual effects. Despite the negative reviews, the film has gained a cult following due to its over-the-top action sequences and premise.

One interesting aspect of the movie is its focus on climate change and the idea of a global system of climate-controlling satellites, which was inspired by a conversation between Devlin and his daughter. While the film's execution was criticized, the idea of using technology to combat climate change remains a relevant and thought-provoking topic. Overall, Geostorm may not have been a commercial or critical success, but it remains a unique and entertaining entry into the disaster movie genre.

Cast of Geostorm

Gerard Butler stars as Jake Lawson, the chief architect of the climate-controlling satellite system called "Dutch Boy". Butler is a Scottish actor known for his roles in action films like 300, Olympus Has Fallen, and the How to Train Your Dragon franchise.

Jim Sturgess plays Max Lawson, Jake's younger brother who takes over as chief architect of Dutch Boy. Sturgess is an English actor known for his roles in Across the Universe, Cloud Atlas, and the TV series Close to the Enemy.

Abbie Cornish portrays Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson, Max's girlfriend who helps him try to stop the Geostorm. Cornish is an Australian actress known for her roles in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Bright Star, and the TV series Jack Ryan.

Ed Harris plays Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom, who takes over Dutch Boy after Max. Harris is an American actor known for his roles in Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, and Westworld.

Andy García stars as U.S. President Andrew Palma, who is caught up in the crisis caused by the malfunctioning satellites. García is a Cuban-American actor known for his roles in The Godfather Part III, Ocean's Eleven, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Surviving the Geostorm: A Mediocre Disaster Flick

Geostorm had all the ingredients for a thrilling disaster movie: a star-studded cast, epic visual effects, and a timely message about climate change. However, the execution fell short, with a convoluted plot, wooden dialogue, and lackluster characters. While it's not a complete disaster, it's not exactly a success either.

Despite its faults, Geostorm is not without its redeeming qualities. The action sequences are entertaining, and the concept of a satellite system controlling the weather is intriguing. Additionally, the movie's relevance to current global issues adds a layer of importance to the story.

Unfortunately, the movie's flaws overshadow its strengths. The characters are underdeveloped and difficult to empathize with, and the plot is messy and hard to follow. The acting is also subpar, with even talented actors like Gerard Butler and Ed Harris delivering lackluster performances.

Overall, Geostorm is a mediocre disaster flick that fails to live up to its potential. It may be worth a watch for fans of the genre, but for others, it's better to wait for a rainy day to catch it on TV.

If you're interested in watching Geostorm or any other movies that might be blocked in your region, consider signing up for ExpressVPN. With ExpressVPN, you can unlock content on Netflix and other streaming services from different countries, including Germany where Geostorm is currently available. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!
