Geostorm Plot Summary

In the near future, the world faces a series of catastrophic natural disasters, prompting the creation of a global network of climate-controlling satellites called "Dutch Boy". When the system neutralizes a typhoon in Shanghai, the chief architect, Jake Lawson, is reprimanded by a US Senate subcommittee for bringing Dutch Boy online without authorization. He is replaced by his younger brother, Max, who works under US Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom.

Three years later, a UN team stationed in the Registan Desert discovers a frozen village, and an Indian engineer working on the International Climate Space Station (ICSS) is killed in a supposed accident after he copies data from the satellite responsible for Afghanistan onto a hard drive. After convincing the US President to conduct an investigation, Max persuades Jake to go to the ICSS to investigate. However, they soon discover that a computer virus has been introduced, causing the malfunctioning satellites and wiping out the login access of key senior personnel to the satellite.

Suspecting Palma is using Dutch Boy as a weapon, Jake tells Max he needs to reboot the system to eliminate the virus, requiring the kill code held by Palma. Along the way, they discover a global cataclysm known as a "Geostorm" is rapidly approaching if the malfunction continues. This sets in motion a race against time to save the planet from the storm of epic proportions caused by malfunctioning climate-controlling satellites.

The Making of Geostorm

Geostorm is a 2017 American science-fiction disaster film directed, co-written, and co-produced by Dean Devlin, marking his feature directorial debut. The film stars Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, and Andy García.

Devlin had the initial idea for the film when his daughter asked if there was a machine that could fix climate change. This sparked the concept of a network of climate-controlling satellites, which became the central focus of the film. The script went through multiple drafts, with the help of Paul Guyot, and the project was finally purchased by Skydance Productions in 2013. After being turned down by Skydance's distributing partner, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. took on the project, beginning pre-production on July 7, 2014.

The film was shot on location in New Orleans, Louisiana, with some NASA scenes filmed at a Rocket Factory in New Orleans. However, after poor test screenings, $15 million reshoots were conducted in Louisiana in December 2016, under new producer Jerry Bruckheimer, writer Laeta Kalogridis, and director Danny Cannon. The reshoots added new characters to the script and recast the role of Winnick with Julia Denton.

Despite its impressive visual effects and star-studded cast, Geostorm was heavily panned by critics upon its release. It was criticized for its weak storytelling and over-reliance on special effects. The film also underperformed at the box office, grossing only $221.6 million worldwide against a budget of $120-130 million, ending up as a financial failure for Warner Bros. Pictures and Skydance Media.

Surviving the Geostorm: A Review

Geostorm is a movie that promises a thrilling ride through a world on the brink of destruction, and it delivers on that front. With an all-star cast, impressive visual effects, and a premise that taps into our fears about climate change, it has all the ingredients of a blockbuster hit. However, in execution, it falls short of its potential.

The plot is convoluted and often feels like it's trying to do too much at once. The film tries to balance a political thriller with a disaster epic, but neither element is fully developed. The characters are one-dimensional, and their relationships feel forced. The dialogue is also clunky and heavy-handed, with characters delivering speeches that sound more like exposition than natural conversation.

Despite its flaws, Geostorm is still an enjoyable movie. The action sequences are well-choreographed, and the special effects are impressive. The film's message about the dangers of climate change is also an important one, and it's commendable that the filmmakers tried to tackle such a complex issue in a mainstream movie.

However, at the end of the day, Geostorm is a movie that falls short of its potential. It's not a bad movie by any means, but it's also not a great one. For those who are looking for a mindless disaster flick to pass the time, it's worth a watch. For everyone else, it's probably best to skip this one and find something else to watch.

If you do decide to watch Geostorm, make sure to sign up for ExpressVPN to access it on Netflix in Germany. With ExpressVPN, you'll be able to unlock a whole world of movies and TV shows that you wouldn't be able to access otherwise. It's easy to use and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so there's no reason not to give it a try. Happy streaming!
