Plot Summary of Terrifier

Terrifier is a slasher film that follows two friends, Tara and Dawn, as they encounter Art the Clown on Halloween night. Art is an enigmatic serial killer who follows the girls into a pizzeria and terrifies Tara with his advances. After being removed from the premises, Art returns and brutally kills the workers inside. Tara and Dawn leave the pizzeria to discover that one of Dawn's car tires has been slashed, and they call Tara's sister Vicky for help.

As they wait for Vicky, Tara enters a derelict apartment building to use the restroom and encounters the Cat Lady, a deluded squatter who believes a doll she carries is her child. Art enters Dawn's car and abducts her, while Tara encounters Art inside the apartment building. After a terrifying chase, Art subdues Tara and forces her to watch as he saws Dawn in half with a hacksaw. Tara escapes, but Art shoots her dead. The Cat Lady witnesses this and seeks help from a pest control worker, Mike, but he dismisses her as insane.

Art then stalks Mike and knocks him unconscious with a hammer. Vicky arrives to take Tara and Dawn home but is lured into the basement by Art. There, she discovers Art, who has severely mutilated the Cat Lady and is wearing her scalp and breasts. Art chases Vicky, who manages to escape but finds her sister's corpse. Art catches up to her and attacks her, but Mike arrives and knocks Art unconscious. As they flee and call 9-1-1, Art appears and overpowers Mike, killing him. Vicky escapes into a garage, but Art rams through the door and runs her over with a pickup truck. As she lies unconscious, Art begins to eat her face.

The police finally arrive, but Art shoots himself inside his mouth with a pistol before he can be apprehended. The officers discover Vicky is still alive. Art's body is taken to a morgue, along with the bodies of his victims. When the medical examiner unzips Art's body bag, Art reanimates and strangles him to death. One year later, Vicky is released from the hospital after rehabilitating from the injuries inflicted by Art.

Production of Terrifier

Terrifier was written and directed by Damien Leone, who also created the character of Art the Clown in his previous short films. Leone wrote the film specifically to showcase Art and his practical effects work, which includes the controversial hacksaw death scene. The film was produced on a low budget of $35,000 and had an Indiegogo campaign, although it did not reach its goal. Leone has expressed regret over the underdevelopment of the protagonists in the movie.

The role of Art was originally played by Mike Giannelli in Leone's previous films, but Giannelli retired from acting before production on Terrifier began. David Howard Thornton replaced him in the role and was already familiar with the character from his appearance in the horror anthology film All Hallows' Eve. Thornton impressed Leone during auditions by improvising a kill scene in mime, ultimately winning the role of Art.

Terrifier premiered at the Telluride Horror Show Film Festival in October 2016 before being picked up by Dread Central Presents and Epic Pictures for a limited theatrical release in March 2018. The film received mixed reviews, with praise directed towards the special effects and portrayals of Jenna Kanell and David Howard Thornton, while the writing was subject to criticism. Despite this, the film quickly became a cult favorite among horror fans and led to the release of a sequel, Terrifier 2, in 2022.

Terrifyingly Good: A Review of Terrifier

If you're a fan of horror movies that are pure, adrenaline-pumping, and straight-up terrifying, Terrifier is definitely one to watch. Damien Leone's low-budget slasher flick is a love letter to the classic horror genre, and it's clear that every frame was crafted with care and attention to detail. From the creepy clown makeup to the gruesome special effects, the movie is a feast for the eyes (if you can stomach it).

One of the things that sets Terrifier apart from other horror films is its antagonist, Art the Clown. David Howard Thornton gives a chilling and memorable performance as the silent, sadistic killer. He's a throwback to classic horror icons like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, and he's sure to give you nightmares long after the credits roll.

Another standout feature of Terrifier is its practical effects work. The movie is filled with gory, over-the-top death scenes that are sure to shock and delight horror fans. The infamous hacksaw scene, in particular, is a masterclass in practical effects and is not for the faint of heart.

While some critics have criticized Terrifier for its underdeveloped characters and lack of plot, I would argue that those elements are not what make this movie great. Terrifier is a movie that knows exactly what it is - a bloody, intense, and terrifying ride - and it delivers on that promise in spades.

If you're looking for a horror movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you feeling thoroughly spooked, Terrifier is the perfect pick. And with ExpressVPN, you can watch it on Netflix and many more streaming services that might be unavailable in your area. Sign up now to experience the terror!
