Plot Summary of American History X

American History X is a powerful and thought-provoking film about two brothers, Derek and Danny Vinyard, who are involved in the white power skinhead and neo-Nazi movements in Los Angeles. The film opens with Danny antagonizing his Jewish history teacher Murray by choosing to write a civil rights essay on Mein Kampf. After being threatened with expulsion, Danny's first assignment is a paper on his older brother Derek, a former neo-Nazi leader who has just been released from prison.

Years earlier, Derek's father, a firefighter, was shot and killed by a black narcotics dealer while putting out a fire at their home. This event sets off a series of racially-motivated incidents and leads Derek to join a violent white supremacist gang called the Disciples of Christ. After Derek is arrested and sentenced to three years in prison for voluntary manslaughter, he is rehabilitated and tries to prevent his younger brother Danny from being indoctrinated further in the neo-Nazi movement.

American History X is a powerful exploration of racism, redemption, and the consequences of hate. The film features outstanding performances from Edward Norton and Edward Furlong, and has been widely praised for its message and impact on audiences. However, be warned that the film contains graphic violence and disturbing themes that may not be suitable for all viewers.

The Making of American History X

American History X, directed by Tony Kaye and written by David McKenna, was produced by New Line Cinema and released in 1998. The film stars Edward Norton and Edward Furlong, with supporting roles from Fairuza Balk, Stacy Keach, Elliott Gould, Avery Brooks, Ethan Suplee, and Beverly D'Angelo.

One interesting aspect of the film's production is that McKenna wrote the script based on his own childhood and experiences of growing up in San Diego. He sold the script to New Line Cinema, which was impressed by the writing and greenlit the project. Kaye, who had previously worked in advertising and music videos, was hired as the film's director, making American History X his feature directorial debut.

However, before the film's release, Kaye and the film studio were in disagreements about the final cut of the film. The final version was longer than Kaye intended, which resulted in him publicly disowning the film and attempting to have his name removed from the credits. This negative publicity affected Kaye's directing career, and he has since directed only a handful of other films.

Despite the controversy surrounding its production, American History X was critically praised and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for Norton's performance. The film has also been used for educational purposes in the United States and in other countries, and is widely regarded as a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of racism and redemption.
