In the near future, after a series of catastrophic natural disasters, an international coalition commissions the construction of a system of climate-controlling satellites called "Dutch Boy". The satellites are designed to neutralize extreme weather events and keep the planet safe. After successfully stopping a typhoon in Shanghai, chief architect Jake Lawson is reprimanded by a US Senate subcommittee for bringing Dutch Boy online without authorization, and he is replaced by his younger brother Max.
Three years later, a UN team stationed in the Registan Desert discovers a frozen village, and an Indian engineer working on the International Climate Space Station (ICSS) copies data from the satellite responsible for Afghanistan onto a hard drive before he is killed in a supposed accident. Jake is convinced to go to the ICSS to investigate, where he discovers that the satellites have been tampered with and a computer virus has been introduced, causing the malfunction.
With the help of the ICSS crew, Jake sets out to uncover the source of the virus and stop the impending "Geostorm," which threatens to wipe out all life on Earth. As the clock ticks down, Max and his girlfriend, Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson, race against time to acquire the kill code that will allow Jake to reboot the system and save the world. But along the way, they face unexpected obstacles and betrayals that threaten to derail their mission and doom the planet to destruction.
Geostorm was directed, co-written, and co-produced by Dean Devlin in his feature directorial debut. The film stars Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, and Andy García, among others.
The idea for the film came about when Devlin was explaining climate change to his daughter, who asked why a machine couldn't be built to fix it. Devlin went on to imagine such a machine and how it could be used for evil purposes. He struggled with the script until he brought on writer Paul Guyot to help develop the brother dynamics.
Geostorm was produced by Skydance Media and Warner Bros. Pictures, and filming began in October 2014 in New Orleans, Louisiana. After poor test screenings, $15 million worth of reshoots took place in December 2016 under executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer, writer Laeta Kalogridis, and new director Danny Cannon. Winnick's role was recast with Julia Denton during reshoots, while new characters were added into the script.
The film was released in the United States on October 20, 2017, in all formats, and heavily underperformed at the box office, grossing only $221.6 million worldwide against a $120‒130 million budget and losing Warner Bros. $71.6 million. Critics panned the film for its storytelling and visual effects, although some praised the cast's performances.
Despite its lackluster reception, Geostorm remains a memorable and entertaining disaster film, with stunning visuals and thrilling action sequences that keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
Gerard Butler stars as Jake Lawson, the chief architect of the Dutch Boy system. Jake is a brilliant but headstrong engineer who takes matters into his own hands when he suspects foul play. Butler is known for his roles in 300, Olympus Has Fallen, and How to Train Your Dragon.
Jim Sturgess plays Max Lawson, Jake's younger brother and the new chief architect of Dutch Boy. Max is a smart and skilled engineer who must step up when the world is threatened by a Geostorm. Sturgess is known for his roles in Across the Universe, Cloud Atlas, and the television series Close to the Enemy.
Abbie Cornish portrays Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson, Max's girlfriend and a key player in the effort to stop the Geostorm. Sarah is a tough and resourceful agent who must navigate dangerous waters to acquire the kill code. Cornish is known for her roles in Sucker Punch, Limitless, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Ed Harris plays Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom, a powerful and ruthless politician who is not what he seems. Dekkom is one of the main suspects in the plot to sabotage Dutch Boy. Harris is known for his roles in The Truman Show, A Beautiful Mind, and Westworld.
Andy García portrays U.S. President Andrew Palma, a leader who must make difficult decisions to save the world from destruction. Palma is a brave and decisive president who trusts his instincts. García is known for his roles in The Godfather Part III, Ocean's Eleven, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
Other notable actors in the film include Robert Sheehan as Duncan Taylor, Zazie Beetz as Dana, Alexandra Maria Lara as Ute Fassbinder, and Daniel Wu as Cheng Long.
Geostorm is a film that falls somewhere in the middle. On the one hand, it has an intriguing premise and some thrilling action sequences that keep audiences on edge. On the other hand, it suffers from poor storytelling and lackluster visual effects that fail to impress.
The cast, led by Gerard Butler, does a decent job of bringing their characters to life, but the writing often falls flat, leading to unfulfilling character arcs and predictable plot twists. The film's attempts at political commentary also feel forced and heavy-handed, detracting from the overall experience.
Despite its flaws, Geostorm is still an entertaining disaster film that can be enjoyed with the right expectations. It's not a masterpiece by any means, but it's worth a watch if you're in the mood for some mindless action and don't take it too seriously.
