The Plot of Green Book

Green Book tells the story of Don Shirley, a talented African American pianist who embarks on a concert tour of the Deep South in the 1960s. To ensure his safety, he hires Tony Lip, a tough-talking Italian American bouncer, to be his driver and bodyguard. The two men come from very different backgrounds and clash at first, but as they travel through the segregated South and encounter discrimination and violence, they develop a deep bond and mutual respect.

As they travel through states where racism is still very much prevalent, Don and Tony face many challenges. They deal with everything from corrupt police officers to racist hotel owners, and from violent mobs to the harsh realities of segregation. Along the way, they learn a great deal about each other, themselves, and the world they live in.

The film is based on real events, and is named after The Negro Motorist Green Book, a guidebook that African American travelers used to navigate the country during the Jim Crow era. The book listed places where black people could safely eat, sleep, and find basic necessities, since many businesses were off-limits due to racism. Although it takes place over 50 years ago, the themes of Green Book are still relevant today, and the film has been praised for its powerful performances, moving story, and insightful commentary on race relations in America.

The Making of Green Book

Green Book was directed by Peter Farrelly, best known for his work on movies like Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary. This was his first foray into drama, and he co-wrote the script with Nick Vallelonga (son of Tony Lip) and Brian Hayes Currie. The film was inspired by true events, and the filmmakers conducted extensive interviews with both Don Shirley and Tony Lip before writing the script.

The film stars Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip, and Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley. Both actors received critical acclaim for their performances, with Ali winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. In order to prepare for their roles, the actors underwent extensive training and research. Mortensen gained over 40 pounds to play Tony Lip, while Ali took piano lessons and studied recordings of Don Shirley's performances to accurately portray the character.

Green Book premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018, where it won the People's Choice Award. It was released theatrically in the United States in November of that year, and went on to gross over $320 million worldwide. The film received generally positive reviews, although it also garnered some criticism for its portrayal of race relations and Don Shirley's character. Despite this, it went on to win several awards, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards.

Cast

Viggo Mortensen stars as Tony Lip, an Italian American bouncer and driver hired to escort Don Shirley on his concert tour. Mortensen is best known for his roles in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Captain Fantastic.

Mahershala Ali plays Don Shirley, a talented African American pianist who hires Tony Lip to be his driver and bodyguard. Ali has appeared in several critically acclaimed films and TV shows, including Moonlight, True Detective, and House of Cards.

Linda Cardellini appears as Dolores, Tony's wife. She is a supportive and loving spouse who remains home while Tony is away on the tour. Cardellini is known for her roles in Freaks and Geeks, ER, and Bloodline.

Sebastian Maniscalco plays Johnny Venere, Tony's friend and former coworker. He appears briefly in the film, but provides some comic relief during some of the more tense moments. Maniscalco is a stand-up comedian who has appeared in several films and TV shows, including The Irishman and The Nut Job 2.

Dimiter D. Marinov appears as Oleg, a Russian musician who is also on tour with Don Shirley. He provides some comic relief and helps to bridge the gap between Don and Tony. Marinov has appeared in several films, including The Way Back and The Equalizer 2.
