The Production of The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid was the 28th Disney animated feature film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures in 1989. The film was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, who had previously worked together on The Great Mouse Detective, and produced by Musker and Howard Ashman, who also wrote the film's songs with Alan Menken. Menken also composed the film's score, and the film's voice cast included Jodi Benson as Ariel, Christopher Daniel Barnes as Prince Eric, and Pat Carroll as Ursula.

One of the most distinctive aspects of The Little Mermaid was its contribution to the Disney Renaissance, a period of renewed success for Disney's animated feature films in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The film's critical and commercial success was a major factor in this revival, earning praise for its animation, music, and characters. In addition to its two Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("Under the Sea"), The Little Mermaid also led to a media franchise that included sequels, a prequel, a stage musical, and adaptations for television and film.

Another interesting aspect of The Little Mermaid's production was the involvement of Ashman, who had previously worked on the Off-Broadway musical Little Shop of Horrors. Ashman was brought in by Katzenberg to help develop the film's story and songs, and he and Menken worked closely together to create a Broadway-style structure with musical numbers. Ashman's contributions were crucial to the film's success, and he went on to work on several other Disney films before his death from AIDS-related complications in 1991.

Cast of The Little Mermaid

Jodi Benson stars as Ariel, the 16-year-old mermaid princess who dreams of becoming human and falls in love with a human prince named Eric. Benson's performance as Ariel was praised for its energy and emotional depth. She has also lent her voice to other Disney animated films, such as Toy Story 2 and 3, as well as TV shows like Sofia the First.

Christopher Daniel Barnes plays Prince Eric, the human prince who falls in love with Ariel. Barnes' performance as Eric is notable for its charm and sincerity. He has also appeared in TV shows like The Brady Bunch Movie and movies like The Day After Tomorrow.

Pat Carroll provides the voice for Ursula, the sea witch who makes a deal with Ariel to turn her into a human in exchange for her voice. Carroll's performance as Ursula is memorable for its villainous tone and dark humor. She has also appeared in TV shows like ER and movies like A Goofy Movie.

Samuel E. Wright plays Sebastian, a red Caribbean crab who serves as King Triton's advisor and court composer. Wright's performance as Sebastian is notable for his singing voice, particularly in the Academy Award-winning song "Under the Sea". He has also voiced characters in other Disney animated films, such as Dizzy the Vulture in The Jungle Book 2.

Jason Marin portrays Flounder, Ariel's yellow tropical fish best friend. Marin's performance as Flounder is notable for his humor and loyalty to Ariel. He has also appeared in movies like Back to the Future and TV shows like The Wonder Years.

Underwhelmingly Okay: A Little Mermaid Review

As a classic Disney animated film, The Little Mermaid has certainly stood the test of time. It has a catchy soundtrack, memorable characters, and a plot that still resonates with audiences today. However, upon rewatching it as an adult, I found that it didn't quite live up to the hype in my head.

While the animation is beautiful and the musical numbers are fun, the film lacks the depth and complexity of later Disney films, such as Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King. The story is fairly straightforward and predictable, and some of the characters are one-dimensional. For example, Ursula is a fun villain, but her motivations and backstory are never fully explored.

That being said, The Little Mermaid is still an enjoyable film with some standout moments. Jodi Benson's performance as Ariel is fantastic, and the songs "Part of Your World" and "Under the Sea" are iconic for a reason. The film is also notable for its place in Disney history, as it kickstarted the Disney Renaissance and paved the way for future animated classics.

Overall, I would give The Little Mermaid a solid rating. It's not the best Disney film out there, but it's certainly a worthwhile watch for fans of animation and classic Disney. And with the help of ExpressVPN, you can easily stream it on Netflix and many more platforms that might be unavailable in your region. So why not give it a rewatch and decide for yourself?
