Geostorm Plot Summary

Geostorm is a science-fiction disaster film that takes place in the near future, where a system of climate-controlling satellites called "Dutch Boy" has been created to prevent natural disasters. After the system neutralizes a typhoon in Shanghai, its chief architect Jake Lawson is reprimanded by a US Senate subcommittee for bringing Dutch Boy online without authorization. He is replaced by his younger brother Max, who works under US Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom.

Three years later, a UN team discovers a frozen village in the Registan Desert, and an Indian engineer working on the International Climate Space Station (ICSS) is killed in a supposed accident. Jake is persuaded to go to the ICSS to investigate and discovers that the satellites have been damaged and their data erased. With the help of the ICSS crew, he uncovers a computer virus causing the malfunctions and wiping out the login access of key senior people to the satellite. Suspecting Palma is using Dutch Boy as a weapon, Jake tells Max he needs to reboot the system to eliminate the virus, requiring the kill code held by Palma.

As disasters continue to strike around the world, including tornadoes in Mumbai, a major heat wave in Moscow, and a megatsunami in Dubai, Max and his girlfriend, Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson, work to acquire the kill code and prevent a "Geostorm" from occurring. Meanwhile, Jake realizes that there is a traitor among the ICSS crew who is responsible for the disasters and confronts him. With time running out, the fate of the world rests on the shoulders of the Lawson brothers and their allies as they race to prevent the Geostorm.

The Making of Geostorm

Geostorm was directed, co-written, and co-produced by Dean Devlin, in his feature directorial debut. The film starred Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, and Andy García. The film was produced by Skydance Media and Warner Bros. Pictures, and was released in the United States on October 20, 2017.

The idea for the film came to Devlin when his daughter asked him why a machine couldn't be built to fix climate change. From there, Devlin imagined a climate-controlling satellite system that could be used for evil purposes. After developing the script, he brought in writer Paul Guyot to help develop the brother dynamics in the story.

Principal photography began in October 2014 in New Orleans, Louisiana, with an initial budget of $82 million. However, after poor test screenings, reshoots were conducted in December 2016 under new producer Jerry Bruckheimer, writer Laeta Kalogridis, and director Danny Cannon. The film heavily underperformed at the box office, grossing only $221.6 million worldwide against a $120-130 million budget, and received negative reviews from critics, with many criticizing the storytelling and visual effects.

In spite of its poor reception, Geostorm remains an interesting film for its ambitious attempt to tackle the issue of climate change through the lens of a sci-fi disaster movie. Its use of high-tech satellites to control the weather and prevent natural disasters was a unique concept that stood out in the crowded disaster movie genre. However, its execution ultimately fell short of expectations, and it remains a cautionary tale of the difficulties of bringing ambitious sci-fi concepts to the big screen.

Cast of Geostorm

Gerard Butler plays Jake Lawson, the chief architect of the Dutch Boy satellite system who is replaced by his brother Max. Butler is a Scottish actor who has also appeared in action movies such as 300, London Has Fallen, and Olympus Has Fallen.

Abbie Cornish plays Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson, who helps Max acquire the kill code to prevent the Geostorm. Cornish is an Australian actress who has also appeared in movies such as Sucker Punch and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Ed Harris plays US Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom, who oversees the Dutch Boy system. Harris is an American actor who has appeared in movies such as The Truman Show, A Beautiful Mind, and The Hours.

Andy García plays US President Andrew Palma, who Max persuades to conduct an investigation into the Dutch Boy system. García is a Cuban-American actor who has appeared in movies such as The Godfather Part III, Ocean's Eleven, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Geostorm was directed and co-written by Dean Devlin, who was making his feature directorial debut. Devlin is also known for his work as a writer and producer on Independence Day and Stargate. The film was co-written by Paul Guyot, who has also written for the TV shows Leverage and The Librarians. The film's reshoots were directed by Danny Cannon, who has also directed episodes of TV shows such as Gotham and CSI.

Battling the Geostorm: A Mixed Review

Geostorm is a disaster movie that takes on the ambitious task of tackling climate change through a sci-fi lens. While its unique concept of using satellites to control the weather is intriguing, the execution falls short in terms of storytelling and visual effects.

The film's pacing is uneven, with a slow start that struggles to establish the characters and their motivations. The plot is convoluted and predictable, with a heavy reliance on clichéd tropes and contrived twists that fail to surprise or engage the audience.

The acting is serviceable, with Gerard Butler and Jim Sturgess delivering competent performances as the estranged brothers tasked with saving the world from a geostorm. However, the supporting cast is underutilized, especially Abbie Cornish and Ed Harris, who are given little to do beyond their one-dimensional roles.

Visually, the film is a mixed bag. While some of the disaster sequences are impressive, others suffer from poor CGI and lackluster direction. The film's heavy use of green screen is also distracting, taking the audience out of the immersion of the story.

Overall, Geostorm is a flawed but ambitious disaster movie that falls short of its potential. While it may appeal to fans of the genre, it fails to make a lasting impact and is ultimately forgettable.

However, if you are still interested in watching Geostorm, you can use ExpressVPN to watch it on Netflix in Germany. Not only will you be able to watch Geostorm, but you can also unlock a variety of other movies and shows not available in your region. Sign up for ExpressVPN now to start streaming!
