The Plot of Terrifier

Terrifier is a horror movie that follows two friends, Tara and Dawn, on Halloween night as they encounter Art the Clown, a mysterious and enigmatic serial killer. After being unnerved by his advances, the girls leave a pizzeria but soon discover that one of Dawn's car tires has been slashed. Tara then encounters Art inside a derelict apartment building where he gives chase and attacks her with a scalpel.

Art eventually subdues Tara, rendering her unconscious with a sedative. She awakens bound to a chair, and Art reveals Dawn, suspended upside-down. He forces Tara to watch as he saws Dawn in half with a hacksaw. Tara manages to escape and batters Art with a 2x4, but he produces a gun and shoots her to death. The rest of the movie follows Art as he continues his killing spree, targeting anyone who crosses his path.

Throughout the movie, Art's true identity and motivations remain a mystery. Along the way, he encounters various characters such as the deluded Cat Lady and a pest control worker named Mike. As the body count rises, the tension and suspense build to a shocking and gruesome climax. Terrifier is a movie that will leave you on the edge of your seat, wondering what will happen next.

The Making of Terrifier

Terrifier was written and directed by Damien Leone, who had previously directed a short film featuring Art the Clown and incorporated the character into the horror anthology film All Hallows' Eve. Leone wrote Terrifier specifically as a showcase for Art and his practical effects work, which included some controversial gore scenes such as the hacksaw death.

The movie was filmed on a shoestring budget of $35k and had an Indiegogo campaign, although it ultimately did not reach its goal. Mike Giannelli, who had played Art in previous incarnations, retired from acting before production began, and David Howard Thornton replaced him as Art. Thornton was already familiar with All Hallows' Eve when he auditioned for the role, and was cast in the role after improvising a kill scene in mime.

Terrifier premiered at the Telluride Horror Show Film Festival in October 2016 before being picked up by Dread Central Presents and Epic Pictures for a limited theatrical release in March 2018. The movie received mixed reviews, with praise directed towards the special effects and the portrayals of Jenna Kanell and David Howard Thornton, while the writing was subject to criticism. Despite the mixed reception, the movie quickly became a cult film and paved the way for a sequel, Terrifier 2, which was released in 2022.

Overall, Terrifier is a low-budget horror movie that achieved a surprising amount of success and recognition due to its distinctive and memorable villain, Art the Clown, and its shocking gore scenes. The movie is a testament to the power of creativity and practical effects work, as well as the enduring popularity of the horror genre.

Cast of Terrifier

David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown: Art is the movie's main antagonist and a mysterious, sadistic killer. Thornton replaced Mike Giannelli in the role and received critical acclaim for his portrayal. Thornton has also appeared in The Deuce and The Village.

Jenna Kanell as Tara Heyes: Tara is one of the movie's main protagonists and becomes a target of Art's killing spree. Kanell's performance received praise for her convincing portrayal of fear and vulnerability. She has also appeared in Max and Love & Bananas.

Samantha Scaffidi as Victoria Heyes: Victoria is Tara's sister and the other main protagonist of the movie. Scaffidi's performance was also praised for its intensity and emotional depth. She has also appeared in Dead Voices and The Ranger.

Catherine Corcoran as Dawn: Dawn is one of Tara's friends who becomes a victim of Art's killing spree. Corcoran's performance received praise for her convincing portrayal of terror. She has also appeared in Return to Nuke 'Em High Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.

Pooya Mohseni as Cat Lady: Cat Lady is a deluded squatter who believes a doll she carries is her infant child. Mohseni's performance received praise for her haunting portrayal of the character. She has also appeared in The Witch Files and The Misadventures of Mistress Maneater.

Terrifier also features other supporting actors who play various characters that encounter Art throughout the movie. The cast as a whole delivers convincing and memorable performances that contribute to the movie's overall impact and cult status.

Terrifyingly Good: A Review of Terrifier

Terrifier is a horror movie that delivers everything you could want from the genre and more. As a showcase for Art the Clown, Damien Leone's creation does not disappoint. David Howard Thornton's portrayal of Art is exceptional, and the practical effects work is top-notch, delivering some of the most gruesome and shocking gore scenes in recent memory.

The plot of Terrifier may be simple, but it is effective in creating a sense of dread and terror as Art's killing spree escalates. The movie's pacing is excellent, with the tension building to a shocking and unforgettable climax that will leave you reeling.

While the movie is not for the faint of heart, it is a must-see for horror fans who want to experience a truly terrifying and memorable ride. The mixed reception from critics and general audiences is understandable given the movie's intense violence and gore, but as a horror movie fan, I can confidently say that Terrifier is a masterpiece of the genre.

If you haven't seen Terrifier yet, I highly recommend signing up for ExpressVPN to watch it on Netflix, along with many other movies and shows that can be unlocked. Don't miss out on one of the best horror movies in recent years.
