Plot of Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures tells the story of three African-American women who worked at NASA as mathematicians during the Space Race in the 1960s. Katherine Goble Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson are all brilliant mathematicians, but they face discrimination and segregation in both their personal and professional lives due to their race and gender.

Katherine is assigned to assist the Space Task Group, where she becomes the first Black woman on the team and faces constant dismissals and belittlement from her white male colleagues. Mary is determined to become an engineer at NASA, but is told she must take additional courses despite already having a degree in mathematics and physical science. Dorothy, the supervisor of the West Area computers, discovers that an IBM 7090 electronic computer threatens to replace the human computers, including herself and her co-workers.

Despite these obstacles, the three women persevere and make significant contributions to the Space Race. Katherine impresses her boss by solving a complex mathematical equation, Mary fights for the right to attend night classes at an all-white school, and Dorothy teaches herself and her co-workers programming to stay relevant in their changing workplace. Eventually, they all make history and their contributions are recognized, but not without facing discrimination and challenges along the way.

Production of Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures was directed by Theodore Melfi and written by Melfi and Allison Schroeder, based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe, as well as Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Mahershala Ali, Aldis Hodge, and Glen Powell.

One interesting aspect of the film's production was the attention to historical accuracy. The filmmakers worked closely with Shetterly, as well as with surviving family members of the real-life women depicted in the film. They also consulted historical experts and archives to ensure that the costumes, sets, and language were all authentic to the time period.

The film received critical acclaim upon its release, with particular praise for the performances of Henson, Spencer, and Monáe. It was also lauded for its handling of important themes such as race, gender, and achievement in the face of adversity. However, some critics noted that the film featured a "white savior" narrative, with Kevin Costner's character playing a role in dismantling segregation in the workplace.

Despite this criticism, the film was a commercial success, grossing over $236 million worldwide against a budget of $25 million. It was also nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. In addition, the real-life Katherine Goble Johnson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015, and NASA's Langley Research Center named a building in her honor in 2016.

Octavia Spencer plays Dorothy Vaughan, the supervisor of the West Area computers who teaches herself and her co-workers programming to stay relevant in their changing workplace. Spencer is an American actress who is known for her roles in The Help (2011) and Ma (2019).

Janelle Monáe plays Mary Jackson, a mathematician who fights for the right to attend night classes at an all-white school in order to become an engineer at NASA. Monáe is an American singer, songwriter, and actress who is known for her roles in Moonlight (2016) and Harriet (2019).

Kevin Costner plays Al Harrison, the fictional head of the space program who assigns Katherine to assist the Space Task Group. Costner is an American actor and filmmaker who is known for his roles in Dances with Wolves (1990) and The Bodyguard (1992).

Dunst is an American actress who is known for her roles in Interview with the Vampire (1994) and the Spider-Man film series (2002-2007).

Hidden Figures: Breaking Barriers and Counting Stars

Hidden Figures tells the inspiring story of three African-American women who broke down gender and racial barriers at NASA during the Space Race. The film expertly balances humor and heart, making it an emotional and engaging watch.

Director Theodore Melfi and writer Allison Schroeder do an excellent job of bringing Margot Lee Shetterly's non-fiction book to life. The film captures the time period and its prejudices with authenticity, while still celebrating the achievements of Johnson, Vaughan, and Jackson.

The performances are outstanding, particularly from Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe. They bring depth and humanity to their characters, making them relatable and inspiring. Kevin Costner also shines as Al Harrison, the head of the Space Task Group.

Despite its critical acclaim and commercial success, some have criticized Hidden Figures for featuring a white savior narrative. While it's true that the film uses fictional characters to represent systemic racism and sexism, the story is ultimately about the achievements of Johnson, Vaughan, and Jackson. The film gives credit where credit is due, and doesn't diminish their accomplishments.

Overall, Hidden Figures is a powerful and uplifting film that celebrates the human spirit and the power of knowledge. It's a must-watch for anyone who loves a good underdog story.
