Plot Summary

In Green Book, we follow the journey of Tony Lip, a bouncer from the Bronx who is hired as a driver for the talented pianist Don Shirley. The two men come from very different backgrounds and initially clash, but as they travel together on a concert tour of the Deep South, they form an unlikely bond.

As they encounter racist attitudes and discrimination along the way, Tony is forced to confront his own prejudices and learn to see beyond race, while Don must navigate the challenges of being a successful black man in a society that doesn't fully accept him.

Through their experiences, we witness the power of friendship and the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity.

The Making of Green Book

Green Book was directed by Peter Farrelly, best known for his work on comedy films such as There's Something About Mary and Dumb and Dumber. However, for Green Book, Farrelly took a departure from his usual genre and delivered a powerful drama that resonated with audiences and critics alike.

The film was inspired by the true story of Don Shirley and Tony Lip, with the screenplay written by Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga (Tony Lip's son), and Brian Hayes Currie. The script was based on interviews with Lip and Shirley, as well as letters Lip wrote to his then-wife.

When it came to casting the lead roles, Farrelly chose Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, both of whom delivered standout performances. Mortensen gained 40-50 pounds for the role and fully embraced the character of Tony Lip, while Ali learned to play the piano for his role as Don Shirley.

The film received critical acclaim and won several awards, including three Academy Awards. However, it also faced some criticism for its portrayal of race and Shirley, with some arguing that it oversimplified the issues of racial inequality that were prevalent during the time period.
