Maleficent (2014) on Netflix, while we wait for Mistress of Evil (2019)

Oct 29, 2019: Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, starring Angelina Joie, Elle Fanning, and Harris Dickinson was released in theatres a little over a week ago. Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB are mixed. IMDB gives it an average score of 7.0/10, while Rotten Tomatoes reports a failing critic score of 41%, accompanied by a high 95% from audiences.

Here is the synopsis of Maleficent 2 according to Rotten Tomatoes:

In Disney's "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil," a sequel to the 2014 global box office hit, Maleficent and her goddaughter Aurora begin to question the complex family ties that bind them as they are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpected allies and dark new forces at play. The years have been kind to Maleficent and Aurora. Their relationship, born of heartbreak, revenge and ultimately love, has flourished. Yet the hatred between man and the fairies still exists. Aurora's impending marriage to Prince Phillip is cause for celebration in the kingdom of Ulstead and the neighboring Moors, as the wedding serves to unite the two worlds. When an unexpected encounter introduces a powerful new alliance, Maleficent and Aurora are pulled apart to opposing sides in a Great War, testing their loyalties and causing them to question whether they can truly be family.
Rotten Tomatoes

As usual, when a sequel is released in theatres it means many moviegoers are looking to watch the original on Netflix before going out to see the new movie. Unfortunately it's only available in 13 Netflix countries around the world (as of Oct 2019: see the list of flags below). If it's not in your country, you can use our steps to unlock Netflix Canada and watch it right now (steps for unlocking International Netflix).

And of course, the usual question is "When will it be on Netflix"...however things have changed. We don't expect this to ever appear on Netflix because of Disney Plus! Disney now has its own streaming platform, and our expectation is that you will need to subscribe to their platform to watch any of their movies and shows from now on. Titles like Maleficent will remain on Netflix and other streaming providers until their licensing runs out.

Synopsis

Turning the classic fairy tale "Sleeping Beauty" on its head, this fantasy drama tells the story from the point of view of evil godmother Maleficent. If you sneak a peek at goodness from the evil end of the spectrum, it looks entirely different.
