The Plot of Shutter Island

In 1954, U.S. Marshal Edward "Teddy" Daniels and his new partner Chuck Aule travel to Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island, Boston Harbor to investigate the disappearance of Rachel Solando, who drowned her three children.

As they begin to investigate, they learn that the staff at the hospital appears to be uncooperative. Teddy begins to experience migraines and flashbacks of his experiences as a U.S. Army soldier during the liberation of Dachau. He also has vivid dreams of his wife Dolores, who was killed in a fire set by arsonist Andrew Laeddis. Teddy takes the case to find Laeddis, believing he is on the island.

Solando suddenly resurfaces, prompting Teddy to break into a restricted ward where he meets patient George Noyce. Noyce claims the doctors are experimenting on patients, some of whom are taken to a lighthouse to be lobotomized, and warns Teddy that everyone is deceiving him. The plot thickens as Teddy becomes more and more convinced that something sinister is going on, and the truth slowly begins to unravel.

But we won't spoil the ending for you. Suffice it to say that Shutter Island is a gripping psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

The Production of Shutter Island

Shutter Island was adapted from the 2003 novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane. Although Lehane's novel had been optioned by Columbia Pictures in 2003, the studio did not act on the option and it lapsed back to Lehane, who sold it to Phoenix Pictures. Phoenix hired Laeta Kalogridis to develop the film, which eventually attracted director Martin Scorsese and actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

Production on Shutter Island began on March 6, 2008, with much of the filming taking place in Massachusetts. Several key locations were used to bring the story to life, including Taunton, which was the location for the World War II flashback scenes. The old Medfield State Hospital in Medfield, Massachusetts, was another key location, as were the stone lodge at Borderland State Park and East Point in Nahant, Massachusetts.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Shutter Island is its soundtrack, which prominently features classical music by the likes of Gustav Mahler, Krzysztof Penderecki, and György Ligeti. The use of classical music was a deliberate choice by Scorsese, who wanted to create a haunting and eerie atmosphere throughout the film.

Upon its release in 2010, Shutter Island received generally positive reviews from critics and was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of the year. It went on to gross $299 million worldwide and has since become a beloved classic in the psychological thriller genre.
